Police stated that the majority of recent counterfeit bills discovered have been used in business deposits, but urged vigilance from anyone using cash.
The increase in counterfeit activity has spanned across the state from Bangor to Van Buren, though police did not release information on the number of incidents reported.
Recent incidents have reportedly primarily involved $100 bills marked with “for motion picture use only” and $20 bills marked with “copy.”
Police urged Mainers to inspect bills before accepting or depositing them and to call the police if they suspect fraudulent use of counterfeit cash.
Police did not provide any details on the investigations into the counterfeit incidents.
