InterMed to Stop Accepting Martin’s Point Medicare Advantage in January 2027

InterMed has announced that it will no longer be accepting Martin’s Point Medicare Advantage plans starting in January of 2027.

In a written statement shared Friday, InterMed President Phyllidia Ku-Ruth explained that “this decision was not made suddenly or lightly.”

“Over the last several years, we have consistently raised concerns that the structure of our agreement was making it increasingly difficult to deliver the high-quality care our patients need and deserve while maintaining a sustainable practice environment for our teams,” Ku-Ruth said.

“We are purposely providing this notice more than eight months in advance, so that our patients have time to review their options and make the best decision for their care,” said Ku-Ruth.

According to InterMed, roughly 4,500 patients are expected to be impacted by this change.

Steve Amendo, spokesperson for Martin’s Point, says the announcement was unexpected, as reported by Maine Public.

He explained that the “communications were sent to impacted members without meaningful prior discussion with Martin’s Point and in advance of formal notice of intent to leave our network at year-end.”

Amendo went on to say that Martin’s Point will continue to offer Medicare Advantage plans and will communicate with members about their options.

Medicare Advantage represents an insurance alternative to Medicare and may include extra benefits, such as hearing and vision coverage, often in exchange for an additional monthly premium.

Ahead of the January change, Medicare Advantage patients will have the opportunity to change their insurance, find a new health care provider, or make the decision to pay out-of-pocket for care at InterMed.

Although this announcement has been made, Martin’s Point Medicare Advantage plans will continue to be accepted at InterMed through December 31, 2026.
