A New Hampshire man shot a police officer on Saturday after law enforcement responded to reports that he had been firing a rifle at his family members, sparking an hours-long shelter-in-place order for surrounding residences.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., officers from the Nottingham, NH, Police Department responded to a residence on Ham Road in Raymond, NH, following reports that Matthew J. Masse, 38, shot at his family members.

Police arrived on scene, and Masse allegedly opened fire on responding officers.

He hit a Nottingham officer in his arm, causing non-life-threatening injuries. That officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was released the next day.

After shooting the officer, Masse allegedly fled into the woods, prompting an hours-long manhunt and leading police to issue a shelter-in-place order for surrounding residents.

After hours of searching, officers eventually made contact with Masse at around 10:06 p.m. and attempted to take him into custody.

Masse allegedly opened fire on officers again, prompting them to return fire.

After an exchange of gunfire, officers found Masse dead.

An autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that Masse died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chin and head. He had also sustained a shrapnel wound to his left elbow at the time of his death.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
