At approximately 1:26 a.m., the Lewiston-Auburn Communications Center received a call reporting a shooting on Union Street.

Lewiston police responded with assistance from the Maine State Police.

When law enforcement arrived, they discovered a woman suffering from a gunshot wound.

The shooting victim, identified as Maliyah Powell, 22, of Lewiston, was transported by ambulance to the Central Maine Medical Center, where she tragically died of her injuries.

She was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for an autopsy, and her cause of death was deemed to be a gunshot wound, and the manner of death was determined to be a homicide.

Throughout the morning of the shooting, the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit and Evidence Response Technicians processed the crime scene.

During the investigation, law enforcement allegedly obtained evidence leading them to arrest Elise Bergeron, 25, of Lewiston and charge her with murder.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Police did not release a booking photo of the suspect.
