PORTLAND, Maine — Portland Police have made an arrest following Saturday’s stabbing incident on Congress Street, providing new details in a case that drew a significant police response and left one man hospitalized.

According to the Portland Police Department, officers responded at approximately 5:25 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2026, to the 600 block of Congress Street after receiving reports of a man covered in blood.

When officers arrived on scene, they located a 45-year-old male who reported he had been stabbed. The victim was transported to Maine Medical Center with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.

Following an on-scene investigation, police arrested 44-year-old Stephanie Vierkant, described as unhoused, in connection with the incident. Vierkant was transported to the Cumberland County Jail and has been charged with Domestic Violence Aggravated Assault.

The arrest marks a significant update to the earlier incident that unfolded near Joe’s Super Variety on Congress Street, across from Longfellow Square, where witnesses reported seeing a substantial blood trail along the sidewalk.

Portlands violent crime rate went down in 2025. The Portland police department should continue their successful policing policies . Success should be celebrated, while we find all crime unacceptable and continue to work to reduce it.

“while we find all crime unacceptable and continue to work to reduce it” does this apply to all illegals or not ? When crimes are not reported, crime goes down.

Ummm, errr, how can one be charged with “domestic violence” if one is not domiciled? “44-year-old Stephanie Vierkant, described as unhoused, in connection with the incident. Vierkant was transported to the Cumberland County Jail and has been charged with Domestic Violence Aggravated Assault.”
