SEARSPORT, Maine – A reported silo explosion in Searsmont on Friday morning triggered a massive emergency response, with first responders from multiple departments rushing to the scene amid reports of numerous injuries and a mass casualty incident.
According to information shared by the MidCoast Region Scanner Page, the incident was reported at approximately 11:06 a.m. Initial reports indicated that a silo had exploded, prompting emergency officials to call in extensive mutual aid resources from surrounding communities.
Scanner traffic and early reports from the scene indicated that at least seven ambulances and two LifeFlight helicopters were dispatched as emergency crews worked to respond to the rapidly unfolding situation. Multiple injuries were reported, though the extent of those injuries has not yet been officially confirmed.
The scale of the response quickly escalated, with authorities reportedly initiating mass casualty incident protocols as emergency personnel converged on the area.
Gov. Janet Mills confirmed in a statement posted to social media that she had been briefed on the incident.
โI have been briefed on the situation unfolding in Searsmont,โ Mills wrote. โI urge folks to stay clear of the area, follow the instructions of law enforcement, and allow emergency personnel to respond.โ
The governor also asked Maine residents to keep those impacted by the incident in their thoughts as first responders continued working at the scene.
At this time, officials have not publicly released additional details regarding what may have caused the reported explosion or how many people may have been injured.
