SEARSMONT, Maine – Sen. Susan Collins joined residents in Searsmont on Memorial Day as the community gathered to honor members of the armed forces who gave their lives in service to the country, while also remembering the victims of the recent fire at Robbins Lumber.
This year’s parade paid special tribute to local volunteer firefighter Andrew Cross of Morrill, who died while responding to the devastating fire at Robbins Lumber earlier this month.
“Freedom is precious, and it comes at a tremendous price. On Memorial Day, and every day, we honor the brave men and women in uniform, as well as their families, who have made the ultimate sacrifice. I was honored to join the people of Searsmont this morning for their Memorial Day parade,” Senator Collins said. “It was incredible to see so many local families and first responders turn out in the pouring rain. In the face of tragedy, Searsmont has been a powerful reminder of the resilience of Maine communities and the kindness of our neighbors. As the community continues to recover from the Robbins Lumber fire, we stand with all those affected and keep them, especially the family of fallen volunteer firefighter Andrew Cross, close to our hearts.”
Senator Collins also attended the funeral for Andrew Cross on Friday. Cross died in the line of duty while responding to the Robbins Lumber fire in Searsmont earlier this month.
