RUMFORD, Maine – A Rumford family and their two dogs escaped safely from an early-morning duplex fire Thursday after functioning smoke detectors alerted them to the danger, according to fire officials.

The Rumford Fire Department responded at approximately 4:55 a.m. on April 30, 2026, to a reported smoke investigation at 501 Virgin Street in Rumford.

As crews were preparing to respond, additional 911 calls came in reporting heavy fire coming from the building.

Firefighters arrived a short time later and found heavy fire conditions on the first, second, and third floors of the duplex. One side of the building was under construction, while the other side was occupied by a family of four and two dogs.

All occupants and pets were able to get out safely, and no injuries were reported.

Officials said the occupants were alerted by functioning smoke detectors.

The Rumford Fire Department requested assistance from the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office to determine the origin and cause of the fire.

The cause remains under investigation.
