At approximately 6:30 a.m., a school resource officer was notified of a burglary at Madison Middle School on Main Street.

He responded and found that someone had allegedly broken in by smashing a classroom window.

The officer also found that several items had allegedly been stolen.

Additional Somerset deputies responded to assist with the investigation, and they were able to allegedly identify the suspect.

At approximately 11:00 a.m., deputies made contact with Adam Nichols, 30, of Madison, who allegedly admitted to breaking into the school.

Deputies recovered the majority of the stolen property, and an investigation remains ongoing to discover the remaining property.

Nichols was arrested and charged with burglary, aggravated criminal mischief, and theft by unauthorized taking or transfer.

The theft charge is a felony due to the value of the items stolen.

Nichols was transported to the Somerset County Jail, where his bail was set at just $250, but only on the condition that he be supervised under the Somerset County Community Corrections Program (SCCCP).

He remained incarcerated as of Thursday afternoon.

OK, what was in a middle school classroom over $1000 and both small enough to fit through a window and easily convertible to drug money?

But burglary itself is a felony.

40 years ago, he’d either be working at a paper mill or the Hartland tannery, all now closed…
