While sunbathers in southern Maine have recently been on alert for great whites, this time it was great blacks.

Bears, that is.

Old Orchard Beach Police Department on Sunday said they first received reports of a bear sighting in the area of Saco Avenue near the fire department.

The bear was observed within blocks of the busy beach enclave’s main drag, steps from the shore.

A second sighting was also reported Sunday morning in the area of Lucette Avenue, also near the downtown.

“Both sightings were confirmed by law enforcement and the animals re-entered wooded areas nearby,” police reported on their Facebook page. “It is believed the animals came from the wooded areas on the West side of Saco Avenue.”

Old Orchard Beach animal control responded and will be monitoring the situation to deal with any further sightings.

The Maine Warden Service was also notified of the sightings in the event they need to respond to assist.

Residents were being encouraged to secure their trash cans and remove bird feeders.

Cops also advised keeping their dogs leashed when outside, and to avoid leaving pet food on the porch or deck.

Authorities recommended burning off any leftover grease or food residue from outdoor grills, as the smell can attract bears from quite a distance.

“If you happen to spot one, remember to keep your distance, don’t try to get a closer photo, and give local law enforcement or animal control a call right away,” police said.

I hope the bear makes it back to his forest fortress & doesn’t get hurt messing around in the streets!

Old Orchard Beach? Bear? I would be more apt to believe “beached whale”. Perhaps the a ledged “momma bear” read in the press about folks eating bear claws…OR gummies.

Hard saying what pissed this one off. GEEZ La WEEEZ

“As you can see, it’s a beautiful day, the beaches are open and everyone is having a wonderful time. Amity, as you know, means friendship”.

Interesting news! It’s good that local authorities responded quickly and shared practical safety tips. Keeping your distance and avoiding anything that attracts bears is the best approach. On a lighter note, if you enjoy bear-themed adventures, I’d recommend Super Bear. I came across it through a recommendation and was pleasantly surprised by its fun gameplay and adventure experience.
