Portland Police Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Crash at Marginal Way and Preble Street

PORTLAND, Maine โ€” Portland Police are investigating a fatal crash Tuesday morning that claimed the life of a pedestrian near one of the cityโ€™s busiest intersections.

Police said officers responded at 11:28 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, to the intersection of Marginal Way and Preble Street for a crash involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian.

According to police, a 49-year-old Portland man was struck by a vehicle driven by an 82-year-old Portland man. The pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Maine Medical Center, where he died shortly after arriving.

The victimโ€™s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Members of the Portland Police Departmentโ€™s Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and conducted a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing and no additional information is currently available. No charges have been filed at this time, as the case remains under review.

The area around Marginal Way and Preble Street was closed for approximately four hours while police investigated the crash.
