Calais Police officer Charles Ball and Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy Taylor Leblanc conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Abinadi White, 35, at the intersection of Main and North Streets in Calais.
It is not clear what prompted the traffic stop, but officers allegedly discovered that White was operating the vehicle following a license suspension, and informed him that he was under arrest.
White reportedly refused to follow commands or submit to arrest, and law enforcement attempted to tase him.
The taser was ineffective, and White allegedly continued resisting arrest as officers attempted to physically restrain him.
At that time, White allegedly grabbed a sword and swung it at the officers.
Officer Ball and Deputy Leblanc then reportedly both fired their weapons at White, who was struck and sustained serious injuries.
He was transported to Calais Regional Hospital before being flown to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where his condition was stabilized.
Both law enforcement officers were placed on administrative leave, as is standard practice after the use of deadly force. The use of force will be investigated by the Attorney General’s Office.
White will be charged with failure to stop, operating after suspension, failure to submit to arrest or detention, and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.
White was previously charged in September 2025 with animal cruelty after he allegedly left his two dogs in a hot car for five hours, resulting in the death of one of them.
