CHINA, Maine — A Lewiston man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after allegedly stabbing a 47-year-old Oakland man in the town of China, according to Maine State Police.

Troopers responded to a report of a stabbing at approximately 12:54 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21.

Investigators determined that 36-year-old Jacob Hebert of Lewiston allegedly stabbed the victim before fleeing the scene in a black Jeep Cherokee.

The victim was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. He was treated and later released.

State Police said Hebert and the victim knew one another and that there was no ongoing threat to the public.

Authorities initially issued a temporary arrest warrant after troopers were unable to locate Hebert.

At approximately 4 p.m., investigators received information indicating that Hebert had returned to the area. A trooper located his Jeep on Deer Hill Road and monitored the vehicle while waiting for additional officers to arrive.

Police then conducted a traffic stop and took Hebert into custody without incident.

Hebert was charged with elevated aggravated assault and transported to the Kennebec County Jail, where he was being held without bail.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
