A newly released census report gives Maine an honored distinction – the high percentage of old people.
The Pine Tree State ranks No.1 in the nation with seniors.
Twenty-four percent of Maine residents are over 65, placing it tops nationally.
Vermont is No. 2 with 23 percent.
The common consensus has been that Florida is where old people congregate but the Sunshine State gets a bad rap – it ranks No. 4 nationwide with 22 percent of old people.
No. 3 is West Virginia, which beats Florida by 0.1 of a percent when it comes to geezers.
Maine has 330,000 oldsters, compared to 148,000 in Vermont.
New Hampshire is the only other New England state in the top 10, ranking No. 7.
Fast-growing states with younger populations, including Utah and Texas, remain well below the national average.
Only 12 percent of Utah is old, making it the spryest state. Texas is second-youngest, with 14 percent.
Cushy political jobs must be good for the blood pressure – U.S. Sen. Angus King, 82, hasn’t had a real job in memory, nor has Gov. Janet Mills, 78, the state’s second-oldest ranking politician.
At a spry 73, Susan Collins, the state’s senior senator, is really no senior at all compared to Angus and Janet.
Collins is just getting warmed up, five terms and counting…

Sheese, almost all comments ” closed “, except for the one that is pretty much meaningless. No doubt this one got clicks.
