AUGUSTA, Maine — Democratic gubernatorial nominee Hannah Pingree has built a commanding fundraising advantage over Republican Bobby Charles and Independent Rick Bennett, according to the latest campaign finance reports filed with the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices.
The reports, covering campaign activity through July 14, show Pingree has raised more than $3 million since launching her campaign, compared with approximately $1.3 million for Charles and just under $800,000 for Bennett.
During the latest reporting period, Pingree raised nearly $900,000, while Charles reported raising approximately $217,000 and Bennett about $114,000, widening the financial gap heading into the fall campaign.
Pingree’s campaign also reported roughly $854,000 in cash on hand, giving the Democratic nominee a significant financial advantage as campaigns begin spending heavily on television advertising, digital outreach, direct mail, and voter contact.
The reports show both major-party candidates have also invested personal money into their campaigns. Pingree reported approximately $70,000 in outstanding candidate loans, while previous filings showed Charles loaning roughly $220,000 to his campaign.
The fundraising totals underscore the financial challenge facing Bennett, who has raised less than one-third of Pingree’s total while running as an independent without the backing of a major political party.
While campaign fundraising often reflects organizational strength, it does not always determine election outcomes. Charles won the Republican nomination despite being outraised by some of his primary opponents, and outside political action committees are expected to spend millions more before Election Day.
The next campaign finance report, due in September, will provide a clearer picture of how much each campaign is spending on advertising, consultants, payroll, and voter outreach as the race intensifies.
