A Cumberland man suffered critical injuries Thursday night after a motorcycle carrying two people crashed into a wooded area in Falmouth, according to police.
Falmouth Police responded at approximately 9:59 p.m. on Aug. 6 to the intersection of Leighton and Brook roads following a report of a motorcycle crash into the trees.
Officers arriving at the scene found two people who had been riding on the same motorcycle and required immediate medical attention.
A preliminary investigation found that the motorcycle lost control while navigating a curve before entering the tree line. Police said the operator struck a tree, throwing both the driver and passenger from the motorcycle.
The operator, a 43-year-old Cumberland man, was transported by Falmouth Fire and EMS with critical injuries.
His passenger, a 35-year-old Cumberland woman, was also transported for treatment. Her injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
Police said alcohol, marijuana and speed are believed to have potentially contributed to the crash.
The Gorham Police Department’s Reconstruction Unit is assisting Falmouth Police with the investigation.
