A new report from the U.S. House Select Committee on China titled “Stranger Pings” details the risks posed to the U.S. by Chinese telecom companies and their potential link to cyberattacks on U.S. soil.
“U.S.-based subsidiaries of Chinese telecommunications companies are beholden to the CCP, and they are a threat to all of us,” said Committee Chairman Rep. John Moolenaar (R-Mich.).
“They make American customers promise to censor information according to the CCP’s laws, and they poison the domestic cyber infrastructure we rely on. All of this leaves us vulnerable to a new wave of state-sponsored cyberattacks from our nation’s biggest adversary. The CCP does not allow U.S. telecom companies into China. We must cut these subsidiaries out of our domestic infrastructure to protect the American people,” he added.
The bipartisan committee looked into Chinese telecom companies China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom. The companies refused to voluntarily comply with the investigation and had to be subpoenaed.
According to the report, all three had their licenses to provide direct telecom services to Americans revoked, but they maintain extensive unregulated operations in the U.S.
Those operations include providing a variety of hardware to American telecom companies. One provider that contracted with U.S. companies included a clause in the contract prohibiting the broadcast of any material critical of the Chinese Communist Party.
The investigation confirmed that the three telecom companies are not truly independent from their parent companies in China.
The committee highlighted that, currently, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) can limit the companies’ ability to sell certain products, but cannot remove the equipment, presence, or network relationships the companies already have in place.
The investigation also tied the companies to notable Chinese cyberattacks on the U.S. through anomalous routing activity corresponding with the time of the attacks.
The report issued a list of recommendations for policy changes to combat the risk posed by the companies, including codifying the FCC’s ability to regulate them, establishing authority over existing infrastructure tied to foreign adversaries, funding the replacement of Chinese telecom technology in the U.S., and requiring monitoring until Chinese infrastructure can be removed.
The committee began its investigation in the wake of the Salt Typhoon CCP-sponsored cyberattack against U.S. telecom corporations discovered in late 2024.
I want to know who, in office, is watching the store. Chinese phone business, Trump, with his half assed ballroom,Senate confirmation at 4:31 A.M. and Collins introducing a Bill on Medicare fraud. All of this done after the fact! What are we paying these elected people for? It sounds to me like bulls-it talk in a Pub when the place is ready to close down for the night. Are we stupid, putting the safety of our beloved Country in their hands? They get nothing done. They need to show up at 8am and go home at 5pm. Then, they can turn in their days paperwork and be accountable. Maybe they’ll get something done. Obviously they are making a mess and billing us for it. Enough is enough. How dare they ask for contributions for elections when they steal from the very people they are asking from. They are a sickening bunch. Shame on them and shame on us for letting it continue.

It’s one thing if there’s one company that establishes company standards of who is allowed to do business, and what type of equipment can be on the introduced telecom network.
That was eliminated without irrelevant federal entity assuming that authority, and that is why we have this problem now.
This is this kind of stuff that gets slipped through the cracks when there’s people like Jeffries farting hard and Shummers nose stuck up his beep sniffing away. Then there’s that side show freak Lora Derousa or something like that she’s has escaped from Barnum & Bailey’s freak show. Then all of the democrats from California are not serious about anything nor do they know what common sense is or all about.
Trust me there’s others to like Agnus on the intelligence committee right. Remember how he cried like a baby that cony high needed to be outfitted with laptops & computers for the school then after he got them said oh wait we need to condemn the high school because the wiring won’t support the computers we need a new high school.
Oh we can’t forget why voter ID sucks because illegals won’t be able to come up with a legitimate ID because they don’t a birth certificate. What a joke these people are. But they see fit to pass out a ssn for a work visa instead of using the EAD for the same purpose.
Now wonder the CCP got over on these people they never saw it coming.
The phone system is only a small part. Where are most o the phones made? China or Chinese own factories in Asia. Computers in your vehicles? yup same place, your smart watch? same place again. Much of the Federal agencies including the DOS and Military use a large amount of Asian electronics. What’s the reason? Why the bottom line / profits, political money for the lobbyists, donations for the politicians. Nothing to do with security or and thing else. It’s only mentioned because it is a election year.
People disabled by over half a century of Democrat (Communist) control of schools and media are ill equipped to think critically before voting.
