The Scarborough Police Department warned beachgoers on Tuesday that there have now been two confirmed shark sightings in waters near Pine Point Beach.

Scarborough’s Marine Resource Officer received information on Tuesday reporting what appeared to be two juvenile great white sharks in the area off the southern tip of Prouts Neck near the mouth of the Scarborough River.
The juvenile sharks are estimated to be between six and eight feet in length.
The Marine Resource Officer was shown footage of the suspected sharks by a shark expert working at the New England Aquarium.
He had been given the footage by a local fisherman, and confirmed that the animals in the videos were sharks.
The police department is sharing the information to “promote public awareness” and urging beachgoers to remain cautious and report any additional sightings, but at this time, the beach has not been shut down.
Scarborough’s Pine Point Beach is among Maine’s largest, with over seven miles of sand.
Ummm… while Pine Point itself is in Scarborough, most of the beach is in the Town of Old Orchard Beach, which is also what the beach is generally known as.
