AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine State Police are investigating after a suspicious package was opened Wednesday afternoon inside the Maine Revenue Services building in Augusta, prompting an evacuation and a response from the state’s bomb squad.
Capitol Police were called to Maine Revenue Services at 51 Commerce Drive at approximately 4:56 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, after receiving a report that a suspicious package had been opened inside the building.
According to Maine State Police, the person who handled the package moved it outside before contacting authorities.
Capitol Police requested assistance from the Maine State Police Bomb Squad, and the building was evacuated as a precaution while investigators evaluated the package.
Bomb Squad technicians used X-ray imaging and presumptive field testing to examine the contents. Investigators ultimately determined that the package contained no explosive or biological hazards.
No injuries were reported.
The Maine State Police Bomb Squad was assisted at the scene by the Augusta Fire Department and the 11th Army National Guard Civil Support Team.
Authorities have not disclosed what was inside the package, who sent it, or what initially caused it to be considered suspicious.
The incident remains under investigation, and Maine State Police said no additional information is being released at this time.
