The Somerset Sheriff’s Department arrested an Embden man on Saturday after he allegedly sexually assaulted a victim under the age of 14.

On Thursday, the Somerset Sheriff’s Department received a report of an alleged sexual assault in Embden involving a minor under the age of 14.
Detective Stacey Slate headed up the investigation.
After receiving additional information, Slate met with the suspect, Bruce Smith, 71, of Embden, on Saturday.
Following the interview, Smith was arrested and charged with gross sexual assault.
He was transported to the Somerset County Jail, where he is being held on $50,000 bail.
His next court appearance is set to be held in December.
Last year, Smith was the subject of a glowing report from Central Maine about his decision to give away his carpentry tools.
That report claimed that, in 2006, Smith was honored by the Waterville Police, Maine Chiefs of Police Association, and the Maine Legislature after he and a friend saved an 8-year-old from being kidnapped in Waterville.
