Maine Sen. Angus King (I) joined a group of Democratic U.S. Senators on a letter calling on the Biden administration to work with Israel to facilitate the distribution of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

On Oct. 7, 2023 the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel from the Gaza Strip, killing more than 1,200 Israelis.

Since the Oct. 7 attack, Israel has engaged in an extensive bombardment and ground invasion of Gaza, with the objective of eliminating Hamas.

The Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry — the only official source for Palestinian causalities in Gaza — has reported that at least 27,585 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since Oct. 7.

Sen. King, alongside 24 Democratic U.S. Senators, wrote in their Feb. 1 letter to President Joe Biden that the “humanitarian crisis in Gaza is dire and the civilian suffering is at an unacceptable and staggering level.”

The group of Senators wrote that the humanitarian assistance currently entering Gaza is “just a fraction of what is needed to save lives.”

The Senators claim in their letter that there is “no evidence of Hamas theft or diversion of humanitarian assistance provided via the United Nations or the international non-governmental organizations.”

King and the Democratic Senators went on to praise the work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) as playing an “indispensable role in providing lifesaving aid to people in need.”

UNRWA, the main humanitarian aid agency in Gaza, is currently facing allegations that several of their workers participated in the Hamas’ attacks against Israel on Oct. 7.

In response, many of UNRWA’s top state and institutional donors have suspended their support, resulting in the U.N. agency being set to lose an estimated $65 million.

Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins stated in late January that the U.S. should suspend all funding to UNRWA until an investigation into the allegations is conducted, and confidence is restored that the agency is “not employing individuals who participate in acts of terrorism.”

According to the Senators’ Feb. 1 letter, the UNRWA employees that allegedly participated in the Oct. 7 attacks were immediately terminated.

“Moving forward, there must be a swift and thorough investigation to ensure accountability so that the resumption of U.S. assistance through UNRWA, when appropriate, remains possible,” the Senators wrote.

The Senators’ letter concludes with a list of actions aimed at facilitating humanitarian aid into Gaza which they urge the Biden administration to work with Israeli officials on accomplishing.

Those steps include repairing and opening an additional border crossing, streamlining inspection processes for trucks entering Gaza, establishing “safe zones” for health and humanitarian workers, restarting the importation of commercial goods into Gaza, and implementing an “additional and longer humanitarian pause.”

Sen. King was joined on the letter by Sens. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Tom Carper (D-Del.), Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.), Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Ben Ray Lujan (D-N.M.), Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Bob Casey Jr. (D-Pa.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), and Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.).

independent KING Why don’t you take care of our own kids first Become a Republican. “On Jan. 25, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Lynn, Mass. arrested an illegal alien with Mexican and Guatemalan citizenship who had been previously convicted for child rape and prostitution charges.”
Put your money where your mouth is.

King has always been a socialist without the guts to admit his communist ambitions. He has just never had the guts to admit his true leanings. Perhaps he will fail to run again as with the way Maine is sliding to the left with tens of thousands of illegal aliens coming into to vote, it will be hard to be rid of him otherwise.

Let him use his own $$$$. he has plenty from his support of wind farms and solar. We need a new rule that when the politicians give our $$$ to others, they MUST supply a large amount from their own pockets, pay and benefits! IF we give to others, they must find the source of those $$$ from other programs. NO MORE TAX INCREASES AND NO MORE DEBT INCREASES!
