A motorcyclist was taken to the hospital in critical condition on Monday after being struck by a car at an intersection in Portland, according to the Portland Police Department.
Shortly after 5 p.m. on Monday, police responded to a report of a serious motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Brighton Avenue and St. John Street in Portland.
Police issued an alert at 5:50 p.m. that the area of the intersection was closed to traffic due to the crash.
Per Portland Police, a 36-year-old male motorcyclist was driving westbound on Brighton Avenue when “for an unknown reason, he laid the motorcycle down.”
A car driving eastbound on Brighton Avenue turned left at the intersection onto Noyes Street, struck the motorcyclist and fled the scene, police said.
The motorcyclist was transported to Maine Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
The intersection was reopened to traffic at about 8 p.m. on Monday.
Portland Police said in a Monday press release that the accident is still under investigation and no charges have yet been filed.
UPDATE: The Portland Police Department issued a statement on social media Tuesday afternoon asking for the public’s assistance in locating a vehicle believed by police to have been involved in the hit-and-run crash.
The vehicle in question, according to police, is a 2015-2020 Silver Honda Fit.
