Two Massachusetts men are facing drug trafficking charges after a York County Sheriff’s Office K-9 successfully sniffed out fentanyl hidden in a Chinese food container during a traffic stop in Alfred.
According to the York Sheriff’s Office, at around 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, a deputy stopped a vehicle on Biddeford Road in Alfred for an equipment violation.
The operator of the vehicle was 23-year-old Miguel Hernandez of Lawrence, Mass., and the passenger was 27-year-old Layhonel Baez, also of Lawrence.
After the deputy “noted indicators of criminal activity” during the traffic stop, the deputy’s K-9 Rebel conducted an exterior sniff of the vehicle and alerted the deputy to the odor of narcotics, the Sheriff’s Office stated.

During the subsequent search of the vehicle, Baez fled into the woods on foot.
The search revealed approximately 36.7 grams of a fentanyl and meth compound in a bag tucked within a Chinese food container on top of fried rice.
A second York County Sheriff’s deputy arrived on the scene to assist the K-9 unit with locating and apprehending Baez.
Hernandez was arrested and charged with aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs.
He was taken to York County Jail, where his bail was set at $10,000.
Baez, in addition to being charged with aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs, will be indicted on a charge of refusing to submit to arrest of detention.
Bail for Baez was set at $15,000.
