A new Gallup poll has revealed Americans’ views on immigration policy as the general election approaches, showing that a higher percentage of Americans want to see immigration curtailed now than at any other time since 2001.

“Significantly more U.S. adults than a year ago, 55% versus 41%, would like to see immigration to the U.S. decreased. This is the first time since 2005 that a majority of Americans have wanted there to be less immigration,” said Gallup on X.

The new results found that, in 2024, 55 percent of Americans want to decrease the amount of immigration, which is the highest that percentage has been since 2001, when 58 percent wanted immigration reduced.

Notably, the new figures show broad opposition to the current levels of both legal and illegal immigration.

This year also marks the only time since 2005 when the number has been above 50 percent since 2005, and represents a significant increase from the 41 percent who wanted to reduce immigration last year.

Under President Joe Biden, there has been a drastic increase in illegal border crossings, which has led to a slew of violent and sexual crimes from illegal immigrants across the country.

In Maine, an illegal alien who entered the U.S. in January was responsible for a multi-car accident in Wells that left an Albion grandmother dead. That man, 23-year-old Oguzhan Cildir, has yet to be charged by the York County District Attorney.

The poll question also includes legal immigration, suggesting that Americans are more willing to curtail all immigration, legal immigration included, than to allow the continued influx of illegal immigrants overwhelming the taxpayer-funded welfare systems in numerous states, including Maine.

Interestingly, in 2020, while former President Donald Trump was in office and cutting down on illegal immigration was a key aspect of his campaign, only 28 percent of Americans wanted to decrease immigration levels.

The drastic shift in American opinions on immigration since the 2020 election may bode well for President Trump’s tough-on-immigration campaign.

The desire to see immigration curtailed increased since last year among both parties and independents.

Among Republicans, who have been historically far more critical of immigration than Democrats and independents, 88 percent want immigration decreased, compared with only 73 percent last year.

In 2024, 28 percent of Democrats wanted to see immigration reduced, compared with only 18 percent in 2023.

This year, half of independents wanted to see immigration reduced, compared with only 39 percent who said the same last year.

Gallup also asked Americans their opinions on various specific immigration policies.

For the first time since Gallup has been polling Americans on their immigration opinions, a majority, 53 percent, supported a significant expansion of border wall construction.

A significant majority, 76 percent, support an increase in the number of border patrol agents, while Gallup found that less than half, 47 percent, support deporting all immigrants in the country illegally.

Despite 47 percent of respondents saying that they support deportations for all illegal immigrants, 70 percent said that they support allowing illegals who meet certain criteria to become citizens, and 81 percent supported a similar measure for people brought here illegally as children.

This strange discrepancy shows that a significant number of those who claimed to support deporting all illegals also claimed to support allowing some illegals to say.

Despite the general decline in support for immigration, a majority, 64 percent, of Americans still broadly believe that immigration is a good thing for the country.

It’s so frustrating to have this convo. Donald Trump sobatoged compromise on border reform that would have eased all this. The only reason the border is bad is because Trump insisted we not solve the problem. Classic MAGA GOP.
