Update: The Lewiston Police Department released the following Facebook post, including images of the alleged suspects, after this story was published.

A Tuesday afternoon shooting in Lewiston left one man who had fled the scene of the incident in critical condition from a gunshot wound.

Lewiston Police say they responded to the intersection of Walnut and Pierce Street for a report of numerous shots fired just before 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Officers in the area also heard the shots and were on the scene within seconds, police said.

Despite the rapid response of police, upon arrival at the scene witnesses reported all parties fled the scene following the shooting.

Police then canvassed the area, and located a male who had suffered a serious gunshot wound.

Police rendered aid to the victim and transported him via cruiser to Central Maine Medical Center, where he was found to be in critical condition.

Lewiston Police said Tuesday afternoon that the investigation remains active, and that they will update the public when more information becomes available.

Tuesday’s shooting comes as the latest in a series of shootings that have plagued the city this year.

Lewiston Police Chief David St. Pierre said at an August press conference that the city had seen roughly 30 shootings since the start of the year, mostly involving the city’s youth.
