Augusta is the worst state capital in the nation, according to a report from the financial outlet WalletHub, based on a variety of factors, including affordability, quality of life, education, healthcare, and crime rate.

Financial analysts contracted by WalletHub scrutinized a variety of factors to determine the best capitals for affordability, economic well-being, quality of education and health, and general quality of life, and combined those rankings to find the overall best and worst capitals.

Augusta came in dead last, just under Trenton, New Jersey. Austin, Texas, tops the list.

Maine’s capital wasn’t on the bottom of any individual categories, though its cumulatively low ranks dropped it to the bottom of the list.

Considering the cost of living, median income, and housing costs, Augusta came in 47th, only outdone in expense by Honolulu, Hawaii; Boston, Massachusetts; and Hartford, Connecticut.

Augusta ranked 43rd for economic well-being, including various factors such as credit scores, debt, poverty, and unemployment.

The city’s general quality of life was also low, coming in 44th place based on metrics ranging from the crime rate to the number of movie theaters and coffee shops.

The capital’s best ranking came from health and education, where it placed 31st, considering school quality, the high school graduation rate, and hospital quality, among other factors.

Interestingly, the ranking does not directly consider the state and local tax burdens of the state capitals.

I lived in Augusta in the late seventies .
Governor Longley used to jog by our apartment before dawn some mornings .
We called it “ Discusta “ . It was an awful place to live .
Just an awful place to live .

Is it OK now to say that it’s not, like most Democrats, a very physically attractive city either?

In college, I had a big poster of two kids swimming in a cesspool while the entire world was destroyed around them…people used to ask me is that where you are from? (No) We have a major Methanie J. Crack (red) house on the corner of 18/19 Patterson and Gannett Street right down the street from the Mayor’s house. A James Trainor is the owner on record. It’s the neglect of the City of Augusta and Code Enforcement(?) that allows MASSIVE DRUG DEALERS to rule that entire East Side neighborhood. Can you say sex offenders? JAMES TRAINOR is the Bruce Cavallaro of Augusta, Me. You do know that Augusta, Me is where 1000’s of Federal, State and Municipal Law Enforcement officers work in the city everyday. Ho hum… we also just built a 20.5 million dollar monolith police station to the dubs, all male, who ply the streets watching online videos, eating bob bons in brand new cruisers, right? So well trained at the JOKE, Maine Criminal Justice Academy, just threw up in my mouth, yes, I am a graduate, lol. Shall I go on…

On a New Year’s Eve we walked down to a place called Hazel Greens on Water street .
It was about the only bar / pub in the whole city .
It was closed . Closed .
We were so happy to leave Augusta . There are no good memories of the place .
Can’t imagine living there today .

Augusta has had a problem for very long time unfortunately it’s only getting worse and you can thank Mills and her Administration. We have an extremely high rate of corrupt politicians, a police force that is lacking, school boards that are absurd, and a extremely high drug and crime problem. I would not advise to move to the city and to be honest with you to the state.
