A Stoneham woman was arrested this week after allegedly speeding near an elementary school and leading an Oxford County Sheriff’s deputy on an 11-mile chase.

According to the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, shortly before 8 a.m. on Wednesday a deputy was conducting a traffic enforcement detail near the New Suncook School in Lovell when she observed a red Jeep Cherokee being driven in a reckless and unsafe manner.

The deputy suspected that the driver may have been impaired and attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the Jeep, activating her lights and sirens, but the driver refused to pull over and fled northbound on Route 5 through Lovell and into Stoneham, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The pursuit lasted for about 11 miles and came to an end when the driver pulled into her residence and stopped.

The driver, 34-year-old Sydney Whitelaw of Stoneham, was taken into custody when she exited the Jeep.

Whitelaw was taken to the Oxford County Jail and was charged with criminal speeding and eluding an officer. Her mugshot taken at the time shows her smiling broadly and seemingly incongruously to the circumstances.

The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office said that multiple deputies and the Fryeburg Police Department also responded to the area to assist in the pursuit.

I saw the video of her swerving onto the shoulder and just barely missing a couple of kids. There would be no smiles if she had it the kids. Impaired at 8AM?
