The York County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Shapleigh home on Sunday after the homeowner allegedly found that a drunken man had broken in while purportedly believing he was at a party in Sanford.

The Sheriff’s Department received reports at around 2:40 a.m. from a Shapleigh homeowner who woke up and discovered a strange man in her house.

The homeowner told police that the man had left the house but was still on her porch.

York Deputy Travis Jones responded to the house and found Nicholas Knuppel, 23, of Brunswick, outside the house. He matched the homeowner’s description and appeared intoxicated.

Jones conducted an interview with Knuppel, who allegedly claimed that he believed he was at a “gathering” in Sanford, not at a Shapleigh home.

Jones took Knuppel into custody and transported him to the York County Jail, where he faces charges of criminal trespass.

He was issued a $200 bail.
