AUGUSTA, Maine – Gov. Janet Mills expressed outrage Wednesday after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot a 37-year-old woman during a federal enforcement operation in Minneapolis, in which the woman appeared to be targeting officers with her vehicle.
“The killing of a young woman in Minneapolis by an ICE agent today is a horrific tragedy,” Mills posted on social media. “President Trump has weaponized ICE into an unaccountable, masked, armed force deployed at his will to target those he opposes. It is a violation of American rights, a gross overstep of his authority, and a fundamentally un-American act that threatens the liberties of every person in this country, not simply those he targets from day to day.”
The Maine governor went on to pledge that state law enforcement would not aid federal law enforcement.
“Maine cannot and will not turn a blind eye to ICE’s unacceptable actions,” the post continued. “This is why Maine law enforcement officers will be prohibited from working with ICE on immigration matters. I will continue to stand up to Donald Trump’s abuse of power that is putting lives at risk.”
