BANGOR, Maine — A private jet carrying eight people crashed during takeoff Sunday night at Bangor International Airport, prompting an emergency response and forcing the airport to shut down, according to federal aviation officials

The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft was a Bombardier Challenger 600 that went down at about 7:45 p.m. The agency said the National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation, with the FAA assisting.

Officials did not immediately release information about the conditions of the people on board or what caused the crash. Bangor International Airport confirmed a single-aircraft incident involving a departing plane and said emergency crews responded at the scene. The Maine Wire has reached out to the airport and Bangor public safety teams for comment.

The crash occurred as a major winter storm moved through the region, bringing hazardous weather that disrupted travel across the eastern U.S.

Audio referenced by multiple reports captured the tense moments after the impact, with air traffic control reporting the aircraft had flipped.
