AUBURN, Maine — Former Lewiston City Councilor Iman Osman’s legal troubles remain active as his attorney, Allan E. Lobozzo, pushes to dismiss felony gun-related charges—while a broader cloud of political and personal controversy continues to surround the former elected official.
Osman is facing charges including receiving stolen property and theft by unauthorized taking, tied to allegations that firearms or explosive devices were taken from two separate estates between late 2023 and October 2024 before ultimately ending up in his possession.
During a recent hearing in Androscoggin County Superior Court, Lobozzo argued the case should be dismissed prior to trial. Prosecutors pushed back, arguing the court lacks authority at this stage to weigh factual disputes or dismiss a properly returned indictment. The state maintained there is sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to a jury.
The judge did not issue an immediate ruling.
The Maine Wire confirmed with the clerk’s office on Monday that the next court date is scheduled for June 17, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. When asked whether the charge had been dismissed, the clerk’s office indicated it had not, signaling the case is still moving forward.
A Case Shadowed by Political Fallout
Osman’s criminal case is only one part of a wider series of controversies that have followed him since his brief tenure in Lewiston city government.
He resigned from the Lewiston City Council less than 72 hours after being sworn in, following his indictment and mounting pressure from city officials, including calls for him to step aside amid concerns the case would distract from city business.
Residency Questions and Federal Drug Raid Address
Compounding the situation were persistent questions about Osman’s legal residency, an issue that quickly escalated into a major political controversy.
Osman listed his address as 210 Blake Street in Lewiston, a property that had been condemned months earlier and linked to a federal drug raid.
City rules require councilors to reside in the ward they represent, raising questions about whether Osman was legally eligible to hold office. The situation triggered calls for an investigation and fueled public debate over transparency and accountability in local government.
Despite the scrutiny, Osman declined to publicly disclose an alternate residence, citing concerns about privacy and safety.
Broader Scrutiny and Community Concerns
Osman’s name has also surfaced in broader reporting tied to organizations operating in Lewiston that have faced scrutiny over funding and oversight, including questions raised about the handling of funds connected to the Lewiston mass shooting response.
While those concerns have added to the public controversy surrounding Osman, his current criminal case remains focused specifically on the firearm-related charges now before the court.
What Comes Next
With no ruling yet on the motion to dismiss and a new court date set, the case appears headed toward continued legal proceedings, and potentially a jury trial.
For Osman, the outcome could carry significant legal consequences. For Lewiston, the case remains a lingering reminder of a political episode that unfolded rapidly, culminating in a resignation, unresolved questions, and a criminal case that is still far from settled.
