Democrat Drama: CD2 Candidates Team Up to Demand Baldacci Disavow Out-of-State Donor PAC Following National Dems Endorsement

Three Democrats running for the Second Congressional District Seat banded together on Wednesday and penned a letter to frontrunner Joe Baldacci demanding that he disavow a new out-of-state left-wing super PAC donating to his campaign.

“A super PAC calling itself 218–directed and funded by wealthy out-of-state donors–began spending money in this Democratic primary in an attempt to buy this election on your behalf. This is wrong–and it should stop,” said the letter.

“The three of us all agreed: Mainers decide our election–not Super PACs, not the wealthy, not lobbyists from away. It’s clear with your acceptance of this money that you think differently. Today we are asking you again: publicly disavow Project 218, and publicly call on its donors to stop spending in this race,” the letter continued.

According to the letter, penned by former state auditor Matt Dunlap, Jordan Wood, and Paige Loud, Project 218, a relatively new PAC dedicated to flipping the House in favor of Democrats, began donating to Baldacci’s campaign on Tuesday.

The national PAC is based in Washington DC and reportedly spent  $17,626,864 in the 2024 election in favor of Democrats nationwide.

Dunlap and the other candidates are demanding that Baldacci publicly disavow the out-of-state PAC and call on its donors to stop spending in Maine’s Democratic primary.

“If you want to represent the people of Maine in Congress, stand on your own two feet. Run a campaign supported by Mainers, accountable to Mainers–and stop riding the coattails of Washington DC insiders,” said the letter.

The candidates also criticized Baldacci for an upcoming fundraising event at Cornerstone Government Affairs in Washington, D.C.

Baldacci received an endorsement from the national Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) earlier this month, and a new Pan Atlantic Research poll released on Wednesday placed him as the strong frontrunner in the race, with 39 percent support compared with runner-up Dunlap’s 17 percent.

That poll notably did not include Loud.

Baldacci has not issued a public response to the letter.
