PORTLAND, Maine – Portland police are investigating a death reported Monday morning at Shalom House, a residential facility located at 503 Woodford Street.

According to the Portland Police Department, detectives from the department’s Criminal Investigations Division and evidence technicians were on scene processing the property as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police said there is no danger to the public at this time.

The department has not yet released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the death, including the identity of the deceased, the cause of death, or whether foul play is suspected.

Shalom House is a Portland-based nonprofit organization that provides housing and community-based mental health services for adults living with mental illness. According to the organization, its work is centered on helping people live stable and fulfilling lives in the community through housing, mental health services, referrals, training, and related support programs.

The organization says it has been operating since 1972, when it was founded around the idea that there needed to be a safe and caring place in the community for people with mental illness to live.

The Woodford Street property has been identified as part of Shalom House’s residential services network. Local reporting has described the location as a group home connected to the nonprofit’s work with adults living with mental illness.

Further information is expected to be released as the investigation progresses. Police said any new information will be shared when it becomes available.

The Maine Wire will have a full report on the matter Tuesday.
