The sheriff’s department responded after receiving a report of an erratic and dangerous driver in Hudson, at the wheel of a GMC pickup truck.
The caller allegedly noted that the vehicle had significant damage to its front end and was doing donuts in a public area.
Deputies arrived and located the truck and determined that it had allegedly been reported stolen from Bangor the night before.
The truck had allegedly been involved in a pursuit with the Bangor Police Department.
Before Penobscot deputies located the truck, it had reportedly been involved in multiple crashes and had driven through an occupied public park. It then reportedly traveled along Broadway, prompting multiple witnesses to report its operation.
Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver allegedly refused to stop and fled.
During the pursuit, deputies allegedly witnessed the vehicle cross repeatedly into oncoming traffic and generally operate in a way that posed a substantial risk to the public.
At one point, the suspect reportedly rammed a deputy’s cruiser intentionally and attempted to strike other pursuing cruisers or force them off the road.
Another cruiser was also damaged during the pursuit.
The chase continued through fields and residential properties, but deputies decided to continue the pursuit after assessing that the vehicle’s operation posed an imminent threat to public safety.
The suspect eventually struck spike mats deployed by deputies but allegedly continued fleeing despite driving on deflated tires and, later, on the vehicle’s rims after the tires had been destroyed.
The pursuit finally came to an end in Corinth when the suspect reportedly pulled into a parking lot and was struck by another truck.
Deputies immediately arrested the driver, identified as Andrew Wright, 22, homeless.
He was transported to the Penobscot County Jail and charged with aggravated driving to endanger, eluding an officer, criminal speed, aggravated criminal mischief, trespass by a motor vehicle, and operating without a license.
Additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.
