Two armed sailors guarding an aircraft carrier were involved in a shooting and one of them is dead, officials said.

The incident occurred aboard the USS John F. Kennedy, under construction in Newport News, Virginia.

The ship completed sea trials earlier this year and is getting its final outfitting.

The shooting victim was identified as Boatswain’s Mate Seaman Jesse Braswell.

Sailors are typically not armed, the exception being when they are assigned police duties guarding a vessel.

The Navy did not identify the suspect in Braswell’s killing.

“The situation is currently under investigation and further information will be provided once available,” the Navy said.

The Kennedy, its completion ten months behind schedule, is due to be in service by next year to relieve the retiring USS Nimitz.

The new $13 billion nuclear-powered carrier is the Navy’s second Gerald R. Ford-class nuclear-powered supercarrier.

An earlier carrier also named for the assassinated president was a conventionally-powered vessel, the only ship of its class and the last conventionally-powered carrier built for the Navy.
