The Cumberland Sheriff’s Department arrested a Wiscasset man on Thursday on manslaughter charges in connection with a fatal crash that claimed the life of a 71-year-old woman in Harpswell in January.

Deputies arrested Alton Wyman, 41, of Wiscasset, on charges of manslaughter, OUI (drugs or combo), unlawful possession of cocaine, and violation of conditions of release.

He was transported to the Cumberland County Jail, where he was issued $15,000 bail.

Cumberland Sheriff’s detectives secured an arrest warrant for Wyman following a months-long investigation into the death of Jean Appleby Johnson, 71, on January 14.

At the time, deputies received a report of a crash on Harpswell Island Road in Harpswell, near the intersection with Tower Hill Road.

The investigation determined that Johnson had parked her black 2019 BMW X3 on the shoulder of the road and was standing outside the vehicle when she was struck.

Wyman allegedly crossed both lanes of traffic and struck Johnson, killing her.

He was previously arrested in March on drug charges.
