At approximately 3:00 p.m., the Lewiston Police Department responded to the Lewiston Public Library after a caller reported that a man had displayed a firearm in a reading room.
Officers arrived to discover that the armed man had left prior to their arrival, and police began an investigation.
The investigation eventually led officers to learn that the armed suspect was, in fact, a Maine State Police detective who was at the library in a prearranged meeting to serve legal papers.
The detective was in plain clothes but was carrying law enforcement equipment, including his firearm, badge, and handcuffs.
Lewiston officers determined that the detective never brandished or displayed his weapon, despite what the caller claimed.
