For several months, the MDEA and Waldo County Sheriff’s Department have received information suggesting that a Massachusetts man had been traveling up from his home state to sell a substantial amount of illegal drugs in the Belfast area.
The MDEA was aware only of the suspect’s alias, not his real name, and he had not been positively identified until Wednesday.
On Wednesday, agents received information that the suspect was traveling to Belfast allegedly carrying a significant amount of cocaine.
Agents surveilled the area and eventually determined that the suspect had arrived.
MDEA agents watched the suspect in a parking lot and approached him there.
They allegedly confirmed that he was the suspect and conducted a search of his vehicle, where they reportedly discovered 170 grams of cocaine with an estimated street value of $17,000.
The suspect was identified as Juan Antonio Arias Almonte, 31, of Dorchester, Mass. He was arrested and transported to the Waldo County Jail, where bail was set at $50,000.
He faces charges of aggravated trafficking in Schedule W drugs.
