A registered sex offender and pedophile from Ohio, known as “Captain Horny,” pleaded guilty on Thursday after crossing illegally into Canada on foot, then back into Maine days later.

In 2021, Darrell Murphy, 42, of Ohio, was convicted in North Carolina on two counts of interstate travel to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor. He was sentenced to 52 months in prison and 25 years of supervised release, with a requirement that he comply with sex offender registration requirements.

One such requirement is that a sex offender must provide local authorities with advance notice prior to any international travel.

On December 31, 2025, the U.S. Border Patrol received a notice that Murphy had illegally crossed into Canada on foot via a train trestle in Vanceboro.

Canadian officers were unable to apprehend him.

U.S. Border Patrol responded to the American side of the bridge and found tracks in the snow leading to the parking lot of the Vanceboro Post Office, where agents discovered a car with Ohio plates.

Days later, on January 5, at around 5:00 a.m., Border Patrol learned that Murphy was traveling back from Canada across the same bridge, and an agent responded to the parking lot.

Murphy arrived in the lot and admitted to the agent that he had illegally crossed into Canada and returned.

The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that Murphy had not notified the Carroll County, Ohio, Sheriff’s Department, the authority with which he is registered as a sex offender, of his intention to travel to Canada.

Murphy pleaded guilty to charges of failing to comply with sex offender reporting requirements, failing to present at a designated border crossing, and violating federal supervised release.

For the sex offender registration violation, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine; for the failure-to-present violation, he faces up to a year in prison and a $5,000 fine; and for violating supervised release, he faces a consecutive prison term of up to three years.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maine did not shed any light on Murphy’s possible motive for his illegal crossing or what he was doing while in Canada.

According to his sex offender registration page, Murphy has used the aliases Darrell Ray Pitman and “Captain Horny.”
