The owner of The Cookie Jar of Maine says she has been nabbed for failure to account for a state sales tax.

Laura Pomerleau said she was shocked when an armed state revenue agent drove into her parking lot.

He handed her a document stating “Notice to cease retails sales.”

“The guy was very, very nice ,” Pomerleau posted on Facebook. “He said ‘go in and call this number.’”

Pomerleau said she agreed to start including the tax.

The homespun cookie chef said she has been pilloried on Facebook for not knowing she had to itemize the tax.

“What I didn’t know was that I needed a seller’s registration certificate for my roadside stand,” she said. “You want to call me stupid for that? OK.”

Pomerleau and her husband started the cookie business in Harmony, Maine as a hobby, “but I guess I’m making so much money they want some of it,” Pomerleau said after the revenue agent confronted her.

Pomerleau started selling her cookies more than three years ago from an ATV trail-side stand outside her home; now she also delivers them to various convenience stores in central Maine.

“What started as a hobby has turned into a full-time job for me,” she says on her Facebook page
