WASHINGTON – Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance have welcomed their fourth child, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance, the family announced Sunday.
The Vances shared the news on social media, saying both Usha and the newborn are healthy and doing well. They also said their three older children, Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4, are excited to welcome their new baby brother.
Alec was born at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where the family said they received exceptional care from military medical staff and the White House Medical Unit.
“We are incredibly grateful to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Walter Reed and to the White House Medical Unit for taking such great care of our family,” the Vances said in their announcement.
The birth is also a notable moment in American political history.
According to historical records, Alec’s arrival marks the first time in 156 years that a sitting vice president has welcomed a child while serving in office. The last vice president to do so was Schuyler Colfax, who served under President Ulysses S. Grant. Colfax and his wife, Ellen, welcomed a son in 1870 while he was vice president.
The Vances first announced they were expecting another child in January.
Since taking office alongside President Donald Trump earlier this year, Vice President Vance has frequently spoken about the importance of family and has often highlighted his role as a husband and father during public appearances. The arrival of the couple’s fourth child adds a personal milestone to an already historic term in office.
The White House has not announced whether Vice President Vance’s public schedule will be adjusted in the coming days as the family spends time with their newest addition.
