At approximately 4:40 p.m., deputies received a report of a grapple skidder—a large vehicle used in logging—obstructing Route 11 in Portage Lake.
Callers also reported that the driver was behaving strangely and claimed that a nearby house appeared to have been torn apart.
Deputies arrived to discover the skidder’s male operator standing on the roof of the vehicle.
They were able to coax the man off the roof and take him into custody without further incident.
Investigators found that there was significant damage to the residence and located a large propane leak.
The suspect was identified as Gary Belanger of Portage and was charged with aggravated criminal mischief, criminal trespass, and violating conditions of release, with additional charges pending further investigation.
The Sheriff’s Department did not specify whether the residence that Belanger allegedly destroyed was his own.
