Biddeford Police are denying they’ll arrest protestors writing anti-ICE messages on public buildings with chalk, contrary to a Democrat state rep’s claim.
Maine State Rep. Rafael Macias, D-Topsham, who traveled to Biddeford for an anti-ICE rally Saturday, told an assembled crowd through a bullhorn, “They said they will arrest people for chalk but they won’t arrest anyone for murder.”
The chalk-arrest claim from Macias came in the wake of people scribbling messages on city buildings in recent days bashing the fatal shooting of a Biddeford resident by an ICE agent.
Biddeford Buzz, which covered the rally, reports that police officials said they will not be making chalking arrests.
“Rep. Macias misquoted the individuals he spoke with – at no time when we spoke with city officials, did they express they will be ‘arresting people for chalk,’” said Joshua Wolfe, publisher of The Buzz.
The rally by the Maine People’s Alliance was designed to “spread awareness of the consequences ICE has had on our neighbors,” the alliance said.
The rally was specifically geared to honor military veterans.
During the rally, Macias “expressed sentiments alleging that earlier in the day, he was informed by Biddeford Police Department that they would be arresting people for writing on the walls of buildings downtown with chalk,” Wolfe reported.
“When the Representative made this statement, we asked him publicly in front of the attendees to confirm that he was told by Biddeford Police they would be ‘arresting people for chalk’ which Macias confirmed a second time clearly and loudly,” Wolfe added.
An ICE cop last month killed Joan Sebastian Guerrero, 26, a Columbian national, during a traffic stop the feds conducted during their attempts to track down an illegal alien.
They later acknowledged that the man they killed was not the suspect they were looking for.
