The New Hampshire Attorney General issued a cease-and-desist order against the Amherst, New Hampshire, school district and superintendent after teachers sent political mailers home with students.

“Live in Amherst? Did your kid recently come home from school with a flyer telling you how to vote? Guess what- your tax dollars paid for it and your kid’s teacher put it in their backpack,” said NH State Rep. Ross Berry (R-Hillsborough) on X.

According to the order, sent on Tuesday, the school district violated NH law regarding electioneering and prohibiting public employees from using government property or equipment to influence voters.

The order pointed to mailers printed by school employees using school property and distributed during the school day.

An investigation found that, during the 2025 municipal election, school employees printed mailers urging voters to support a local ballot question providing funds to renovate the elementary school.

The mailer told voters to support the question and provided the date, time, and location of the polls.

The school employees printed 140 copies of the mailers using two printers during the school day, then distributed them by slipping them into students’ backpacks.

During the investigation, the school district claimed that the teachers likely did not believe they were doing anything wrong, because they often print out mailers advertising things like school dances.

The investigation began after the Attorney General’s Office received a complaint that employees were filming an electioneering video at the school, though the video-related complaint was resolved separately.
