A domestic disturbance in Greenbush on Friday led to two vehicle crashes, including one involving an alleged drunk driver who mistakenly believed that responding officers were attempting to stop him.

It all started when the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department dispatched deputies on Friday evening following reports of a domestic disturbance in Greenbush.

Deputies arrived to discover that one of the parties involved had fled the scene in a vehicle before law enforcement arrived, and they notified local police to begin a search.

Officers from the Old Town Police Department located the vehicle and tried to stop it. Instead of pulling over, the driver allegedly fled and crashed into a local residence.

A Penobscot Sheriff’s Department supervisor responded to the Old Town crash site, traveling there with his lights and sirens activated.

He noticed a vehicle far ahead of him that appeared to be accelerating rather than pulling over to allow the emergency vehicle to pass. He lost sight of the apparently fleeing vehicle but discovered it had crashed shortly thereafter.

During the crash investigation, the driver allegedly admitted that he believed the supervisor was attempting to stop him and that he fled.

Law enforcement believes that both speed and alcohol were involved in the crash.

The sheriff’s department did not release the name of the suspected drunk driver or the person involved in the domestic disturbance, and it is unclear if any arrests were made.

The department specified that they will release no further information at this time, but both incidents remain under investigation.
