WASHINGTON – What began as a high-profile evening of politics, media, and tradition abruptly turned into chaos Saturday night when gunfire erupted during the 2026 White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton.

According to multiple eyewitness accounts, loud bangs rang out shortly after the event got underway, sending attendees scrambling for cover beneath tables as confusion rippled through the packed ballroom.

According to texts from an attendee sent to The Maine Wire, the Secret Service rushed the entire Cabinet out.

“Secret Service rushed the stage and agents with long guns came out,” an eyewitness noted in texts provided to The Maine Wire.

President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior officials were quickly evacuated by the U.S. Secret Service as agents moved to secure the scene.

Guests described a sudden shift from a formal dinner atmosphere to one of fear and urgency. Some initially mistook the sounds for dropped equipment or stage effects, but panic spread rapidly as security personnel reacted and shouted instructions.

Journalists and attendees ducked, while others were pushed to the ground by agents attempting to shield them. The confusion was compounded by conflicting directions in the first moments—some guests were told to stay put, while others were ushered out.

Television anchor Wolf Blitzer reported seeing a suspect with a firearm subdued by law enforcement near the scene.

Early reports indicate that several shots—possibly between five and eight—were fired near a security checkpoint or lobby area adjacent to the ballroom. Authorities moved swiftly, engaging the suspect within moments.

Law enforcement sources say the gunman was apprehended, with some reports indicating the suspect may have been shot during the confrontation. The Secret Service and other agencies quickly locked down the hotel, while helicopters circled overhead as part of the broader response.

THIS IS WHY HE WANTS A BALLROOM.

With the ballroom, the security perimeter is the White House fence and all of the lawn. No one with a gun can get close enough to shoot at him whereas here the security perimeter was right outside the door.

I don’t know about before, but after this, the US SS is gonna want that ballroom more than he does. And not just Trump, there is gonna be another president after him and another one after him and the same US SS has to protect them all.
