The NH State Police Major Crimes Unit is investigating the incident that occurred Monday evening.

Ashland police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a vehicle driven by an adult male, though it is not clear what prompted officers to initiate a stop.

Officers reported that during the stop the driver produced a gun and fired, striking and wounding one officer.

During the shooting, the suspect was struck, and he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

No other parties were injured during the shooting, and the officer who was shot is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.

Following protocol, the names of the officers involved will not be released until a formal review can be conducted.

The suspect’s name will be released after the completion of an autopsy and the notification of next of kin.

Investigators are currently looking into the circumstances of the shooting and assessing whether any of the officers had body cameras or cruiser cameras that captured the incident.

Further information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.

According to WMUR, Ashland’s Main Street remained closed for investigation as of Tuesday morning.
