After traveling to Baltimore over the weekend to meet with – and fire – Alex Cora, Red Sox owner John Henry has been nowhere to be found.
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy is calling Henry, who also owns The Boston Globe, a “f***ing coward” for avoiding the press.
“From best Red Sox owner to worst,” said widely followed broadcaster Jim Rome. “If you’re no longer in it to win it, sell it to someone who is.”
Casters like Portnoy and Rome hold sway in the stands so if they’re calling for Henry’s head, the Sox boss may actually be feeling the heat to answer some questions.
If not, team CEO Sam Kennedy wouldn’t have felt compelled to leave his cozy office cubicle Tuesday and sprint over to WEEI – as he did – to argue on Greg Hill’s show that Henry “is deeply engaged with this organization.”
Henry has left it to Kennedy and Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow to defend Cora’s ousting.
“He’s very selective in terms of how he engages with the media,” Kennedy said of Henry. “But that should not ever be confused with a lack of involvement or care.”
The last time Henry spoke publicly was Feb. 17, 2020 after the Red Sox traded Mookie Betts.
He didn’t speak after Chaim Bloom was fired, nor after the team traded Rafael Devers last June, according to MassLive.com.
Since Henry is a secret partner at WEEI, his stoolies were assured of the nice soft landing they got from Hill to make their PR pitch defending him.
