ELLSWORTH, Maine — The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a propane explosion that seriously injured the occupant of a converted recreational vehicle in Ellsworth on Tuesday afternoon.
Emergency responders were dispatched to 253 North Street at approximately 3 p.m. on July 14 following reports of a propane explosion involving a bus that had been converted into an RV.
According to the preliminary investigation, the explosion originated inside a cabinet beneath the vehicle’s propane range. Fire investigators believe the most likely ignition source was the electric compressor motor of a nearby refrigerator.
Investigators were unable to determine the exact source of the propane leak. The RV was supplied by two 25-pound propane cylinders located in a rear exterior compartment.
The vehicle’s sole occupant suffered serious burns and was transported to Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital for treatment.
The incident remains under investigation. Officials said no additional information is available at this time.
