The South Portland City Council voted 5-1 Tuesday to ask voters for approval of an $88 million bond to fund the construction of new police and fire stations.
If approved, the city would build a new police station at Cash Corner, as well as a new fire station to replace what has been identified as an aging facility.
This comes after the City Council rejected a $194 million bond to renovate the former Mahoney Middle School property into a comprehensive City Center complex, including a renovated theater, gym and community space.
Earlier this year, the City entered into a contract to purchase the Cash Corner property, most recently occupied by Walgreens, with plans to use the site for a new police station, instead of the Mahoney athletic field.
No tax increases or budgetary accommodations were necessary to cover the land’s purchase price of $2.5 million, as the City opted to make use of $1.5 million in Police Asset Forfeiture funds and $1 million in Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funds, both of which were previously earmarked for city facilities.
Constructing the new facilities, however, will carry a price tag for residents.
According to WGME, City of South Portland officials have said that the plan would result in an estimated $267 annual property tax increase for someone with a home valued at $500,000.
Concerns over the cost of the project were raised by residents and acknowledged by members of the Council.
“I’m gonna vote to send it to the voters, and if it moves forward, that’s great,” Councilor Richard Matthews said. “And if they reject it, then the City Council has a lot of work to do, and we start at ground zero.”
Voters will be tasked with deciding whether or not to move forward with the proposal when they go to the polls this November.

That is a $267.00 increase in taxes in 2028 & 2029 and then an additional increase of $267.00 in 2030 and beyond for a total of $534.00 for a $500K property – is what I understand. This along with all the councils other spending further drive fixed income and working class people out of town. Hope they have a bunch of Elon Musk types who can afford all this.
